33rd Regt. of Foot. Regimental silver salt spoons of the Regency period, 1812

33rd Regt of Eoot, West Riding Regiment [ later to be the Duke of Wellington’s Regiment]. Two officers’ mess silver salt spoons of fiddle, thread, and shell pattern, hallmarked London 1812 [although there is no town mark the duty head of George III and the date letter R identify them as being made in London]. Each spoon, which has the regimental number engraved within a wreath, weighs 20 gms and they show signs of long use in the officers’ mess with heavy polishing. The price is for the pair of spoons but we are prepared to sell a single example for £55.  feb7/3

The regiment had seen much service in India in the late 18th century when it was commanded by Colonel the Hon. Arthur Wellesley, later to be the Duke of Wellington, In the 1812 the regiment returned after the Peninsula War and the following year it went on active service against Napoleon’s forces again in the Low Countries where it fought under its former commander at Waterloo. These spoons were most likely to have travelled there with the regiment.
