An officer of the 74th Highlanders, circa 1868-73

POA

A good group of cartes de visite showing a young officer of the 74th Regt of Foot, which became the 2nd Battalion Highland Light Infantry after the 1881 army reforms. Most of these identify the officer in contemporary ink by his first name and he is  Alfred Gore-Steuart. A later collector’s pencil additions use the name Stewart but that is misleading. The only Stewart in the 74th at this time was Henry Lucas St George Stewart but the collector has been mistaken in his attribution and this cdv is in fact Alfred William James Gow-Steuart who was commissioned into the regiment 30th October 1867 and is the only Alfred in the regiment at the time. This interesting group of cards show the much photographed young Scot in several different orders of dress By 1870 the 74th was stationed in Gibraltar attached to the 42nd Black Watch and by 1873 they had moved on to Malta in the same capacity. The CDVs are each described and priced separately within thi category.  sep18/1
