A pleasing 5½ x 3¾ ins pencil and watercolour or crayon sketch showing a British officer in a simple chair litter carried by two Chinese men, with a further man carrying water buckets in the background. The officer is using a parasol. The scene probably dates from the mid 19th century. jan5/2

Provenance: Acquired,, when I lived in Edinburgh, in a large archive of material from the family of Macdonald of Sandside several of whose members served the East India Company in both military and civil capacities. A few other items from the archive appear elsewhere on the website.
