72nd Foot, Duke of Albany’s Own Highlanders, an example of the 25mm other rank’s button of the pattern worn between 1855 and 1881, when it became the 1st Bn. The Seaforth Highlanders (Ross-shire Buffs, The Duke of Albany’s Own). The backmark is SMITH KEMP & WRIGHT BIRMINGHAM. The button shows wear where it has been polished during use. As well as the construction the other ranks button differs from the officer’s in having the regiment’s number larger.   jun16/1

The regiment was raised by Lord Seaforth and first saw actice service in India at the siege of Cuddalore in 1783.
