A Grenadier Guards officer’s engraved brass stall plate for his charger

The heavy quality brass stall plate, 6 x 3½ ins, engraved SYSTEM BY CHOUMARA. CAPT. JEKYLL, GRENR. GDS. The horse Chumara was probably named after the French military engineer, Paul Marie Théodore Choumara [1786-1870]. The only officer whose name seems to fit is Captain Edward Joseph Hill Jekyll [1804-1876] who had a brief career in the regiment before retiring because of ill health. He was the father of Gertrude Jekyll the garden designer and horticulturist. apr30/1 SOLD 1st May 2025
