A named young officer on an1880 cdv

£24.00

A three quarter length portrait of the young officer in patrol jacket, wearing a sword. An old paper label on the verso of the card identifies him in a contemporary hand as Grattan George O’Neil Ray born at Jhansi India Nov: 4th 1859. Married Maria Langford on the 20th June 1889 at Dalhousie, India. Photograph taken 1880. A later collector’s gives further details of his regiment. Hart’s Army List 1875 shows him as a captain with 15 years service and being adjutant in the 2nd Vol Bn The Royal Warwickshire Regiment [ formerly 6th Foot]. The cap badge he wears appears to show a ligh infantry or rifles bugle so perhaps it was taken at the beginning of his military career and he could have begun that in a different regiment. possibly in India.   jan4/1
