An Indian Mutiny veteran officer in dress uniform

£45.00

A good carte de visite by G. W. Wilson, Photographer, Aberdeen shows the officer full length with his cocked hat on a chair beside him. He wears a leather cross belt with badge, and two medals – an Indian Mutiny with one clasp and a similar India General Service Medal 1854. He also wears a black mourning armband. A tentative pencil attribution by a Scottish collector on an accompanying piece of card suggests he is in the uniform of the Aberdeenshire Rifle Volunteers and has perhaps seen service in the 72nd Highlanders. However a more recent opinion by a uniform expert suggests he is a surgeon. The cocked hand lends credence to this later view. The cdv probably dates from the 1870s.  jan9/2

The 72nd Highlanders served in the Central India campaign during the Mutiny.
