Assignat from the 1790s This example is for 25 Livres

An original example of an ASSIGNAT  issued at the time of the French Revolution as part of a system of paper promissary notes in various values acccording to a law of 1793 [Year 2 in the revolutionary calendar]. This example has the value of 25 Livres and measures 13.7 x 6.3 cm. The small print has a sinister reminder of the terrible times in which people were living [and dying] for it translates as The law punishes the forger with death.    aug23/3
