An unusual and large three quarter length portrait of the Maharaja of Baroda on a 13 x 7½ ins royal sized card of R Jalbhoy, Photographic Artist, Karachi, IndiaH. H. Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III, G.C.S.I. was one of the handful of most senior Indian princes who received a 21 gun salute. This portrait is unusual in showing the ruler wearing eleven medals from a single ribbon. These are not easy to explain although one shows a double eagle which could be the one used by the Maharaja of Mysore. There is some damage to the top left corner and some staining to the lower right, also a few small mark or stains including one on the central medal. dec14/3

H H Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III of Baronda [1863-1951] was a member of the Gaekwad dynasty of Marathas and is sometimes referred to as the Gaewad [ot Gaekwar] of Baroda. He ruled from 1875 until Independence in 1948.
