BAVARIA. Prince Luitpold Karl Joseph Wilhelm Ludwig [1821-1912] was the Regent and  de facto ruler of Bavaria from 1886 to 1812 as a result of the incapacity  of his two nephew Kings. This portrait of the Regent shows him in later age, three quarter length, wearing uniform, signed in ink Luitpold P. Regent von Bayern and still in a contemporary handsome wooden frame. Part of the old framer’s label on the back show it to be by H. DEVONALD, St John’s Wood, London. He had a distinguished military career after joining the Artillery in 1835. he commanded a division during the Austro=Prussian War and was Inspector General of the Army during the Franco Prussian War. He took over many royal duties during the long absences of the eccentric King Ludwig II.
