BIKANER. A shooting party with Maharaja Ganga Singh, early 1900s

The 11¼ x 8¾ ins vintage photograph, mounted on old photographer’s card, shows a shooting party with a very large bag of the renowned sandgrouse. The photograph is probably Edwardian and is in the soft focus style fashionable then. H H Maharaja Sir Ganga Singh stands with his hands on hips near the centre of this party. Invitations to the sandgrouse shoots, especially the Christmas one, were much prized by both the British in India and other Indian Royalty. The photograph is probably taken at Gagner Palace, about 30 miles from the city of Bikaner.        mar12/3
