Blenheim Palace: an 18th century engraving in old simple gilt frame

£340.00 £280.00

The engraving, 15¼ x 9½ ins visible, is in a simple gilt frame 17½ x 11½ ins. The title at the bottom identifies this as BLENHEIM HOUSE: Built at the Expense of the Public and settled on the DUKE of MARLBOROUGH & His POSTERITY. The engraver is identifies as Prattent. A little water staining top right and lightly along the bottom. Built in the rare English baroque style to design by Vanburgh and Hawksmoor it was intended for John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough [1650-1722] and hero of the Battle of Blenheim during the War of Spanish Succession in Europe. This is the courtyard view seen as one enters the palace these days. It has long been famous as the only officially designated British palace other than those of Royal or Episcopal origin. It was the birthplace of Winston Spencer Churchill, a later wartime hero from this family.        sep8/1

This is one of a series of items from my private collection which I have decided to sell off as I no longer have a large house with long hallways, staircases, and lots of spare rooms to fill, after downsizing to two much smaller apartments. It was probably bought in the 1970s. I have never removed it from its frame although I have just dusted it.
