A vintage oval photograph, 8½ x 6½ ins, showing a street view which we believe is Chowringhee, probably taken in the 1870s or 1880s when the city was the capital of India and sometimes called the ‘second city of the Empire’. The photograph is pasted to an old album leaf of paper, 11 x 9 ins. There is a small old ink blot on the left side just above the building with the flag flying. apr9/3
