Earl of Carlisle. A good 26mm silver plated armorial livery button of the Howard family with the crest [a lion statant regardant the tail extended] within a garter, all beneath an earl’s coronet. The family seat is Naworth Castle, Cumberland but the crest, often called the still tailed lion, is now most associated with Castle Howard in Yorkshire. The backmark of this Irish made button isH.
