Delhi 1861. A large group of Europeans.

£30.00

A full plate albumen print, 10¾ x 8 ins, on part of an old paper album page, titled in contemporary pencil Delhi 1861. There ia an unfortunate line of damage caused by an old attempt at repair running through a few of the figures seated at the front. The group is situated in an arcaded setting which could well be part of the Red Fort. Many of the men wear low crowned solar topis but, unusually for the time, none of them is in uniform. The significance of this large group, taken just after the Indian Mutiny, is intriguing. None of the figures is immediately recognisable.  apr28/9
