£260.00

DURHAM LIGHT INFANTRY. 2nd Battalion. A Record of the Service of the Battalion, to which is added a series of photographs, including every man in the corps, and other views, specially taken at Poona, India, February, 1897. Lt. Col. F. H. Whitby, Commanding. Made by The Historical Publishing Co, Philadelphia, P.A., U.S.A.. Published by C. B. Burrows, c/o Wm. Watson & Co. BOMBAY and LONDON. [no date but presumed 1897] oblong folio [14 x 11 ins.]

Printed on the facing page only, 33 pages of historical text, 1p about Polo, 34 pages of portraits, mainly in groups or teams and every person named .The binding is of full leather gilt but in poor condition with the boards loose and some leather lacking. The preliminary pages are detached from the block though the main text and photogrraphic images are quite clean. The book is designed to look like a photograph album and the spine is in fact titled PHOTOGRAPHS. Even amongst this kind of book which was often publihed when a regiment was in India, this example is unusual in having all the sitters in the group photographs named on the lower margin. Often the officers, commissioned & non commissioned, are named but the others are not.    A book well worth spending time or money restoring.  jun11/1
