East India Register 1835 1st edition

Clark of the Secretary’s Office, East India House. Second Edition Corrected to 6th May 1834  Parbury, Allen, and Co. [London] 1835 small 8vo.

 xliv, 283pp including 8pp casualties (Bengal),  167pp including 7pp casualties (Madras), 141pp including 4pp casualties (Bombay). Re-cased contemporary red leather gilt  the boards very good but a section at the top of the spine damaged with repaired loss. This copy is combined with the Royal Kalendar, making it a very fat  volume [4 ins thick, see footnote]. Fully indexed lists of all serving and retired officers in the three Presidency armies, together with lists of civil servants, Indian Navy officers (down to Midshipmen), government officials, etc. A feature of the Register is the list of annual casualties with date and place of death, retirement, etc. This volume was published when the Lord William Cavendish Bentinck, G.C.B., G.C.H. was Governor General and Commander-in-chief. The Bombay section is complete with its index but is not followed by the section of advertisements &c  sometimes added and usually around 25 pages.   jan9/1

The binding of so many books in one makes it rather unwieldly and, although all legible , the book will not lie flat when open.  The volumes bound before the  East India Register are: Royal Kalendar 411pp, Appendix & Index,  Companion to the Kalendars 132pp, Ridgway’s Peerage 187pp, Ridgway’s Baronetage 150pp. The last two do not have illustrations. This is the latest date we have encountered the Register bound with other volumes like although it was quite fashionable in Georgian times. The latest one in our reference collection bound thus is 1817, the earliest 1793.
