East Riding of Yorkshire Imperial Yeomanry, officer’s gilt 26mm button with backmark J. R. GAUNT & SON LONDON. A handsome example of the button retaining virtually full gilt. The unusual appearance of a fox on a military button harks back to the origin of the regiment in strong fox hunting country and their motto appearing beneath the fox on badges was Forrard. The Imperial Yeomanry was formed from volunteers for service in the South African War. jun23/5
