Sir Donald Martin Stewart [1814-1900] was gazetted Ensign in gthe Bengal Army in 1840, serving initially in the 9th Bengal N.I., Hart’s Army List 1880  lists his war saervices: served against the hill tribes on rthe Peshawar Frontierin 1854-55 (mentioned in despatches). Commanded the ||||Volunteers serving the Allyghur  ditrict in May and June1857, andand all communication witht Upper Provinces having ben cut off he volunteered to carry despatches fro the Government of the North-West Provinces to the Officer commanding at Delhi ; on arrival in camp was appointed Deputy Assistant Adjutant General  of the Field Force and served throughout the siege of Delhi (mentioned in despatches and Brevet of Major); afterwards served as Assitant Adjutant General of the Army at the siege and capture of Lucknow, and throughout the operations at Rohilcund (mentioned in despatches, Brevet of Lt. Colonel, Medal with two Clasps). Commanded the Bengal Brigade with the expedition to Abyssinia in 1867-68 (mentioned in despatches, Medal and C.B.). He later commanded the Lahore Division , led the Southern Arxmy to Kandaha, became supreme military and political commander at Kabul, gave the order for Lord Roberts’s march from Kabul to Kandahar.
