Fatehpur Sikri, an 11 x 8½ inch vintage photograph, circa 1900

£27.00

A good vintage view of some of the fine Mughal architecture to be seen in this abandoned city some 20 miles from Agra. Built on a sandstone ridge by Emperor Akbar [ruled from 1556 -1605], it was abandoned by him in favour of his new city at Agra because the site lacked easy access to water, making it impractical. The eerie serenity captured in these old photographs can seldom be fully appreciated today because of the city’s popularity with tourists. FS4
