George III period silver sauce label for Madeira 1804-5

POA

The 38 x 18 mm label is of rectangular shape with curved, canted corners with a triple stepped border. It has slight curvature to fit the bottle and the title MADEIRA is curved allowing for the crest engraved beneath. The crest of a bird in display on a torse is unidentified. It is hallmarked on the reverse for Robert Phipps & Edward Robinson 1804-5. There is a duty head for George III and the maker were working in London under this name from 1783 to 1811. Although Madeira is frequently found on wine labels it is much less common in this size. John Salter: Sauce Labels lists two columns of titles made by this silversmith but there is no mention of Madeira.      may13/1  SOLD  13th May 2026

Note: The eagle bears similarity to that used in the 1st & 3rd quarters of the arms of Earls of Dalhousie. If this were that eagle one would like to think of it in use during the time when the later Marquis was Viceroy of India.
