H.R.H. Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught & Strathearn

H.R.H. Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught & Strathearn. A cabinet card by Alexander Bassano, 72 Piccadilly, London, W. (Now at 25 Old Bond Street, London W.) showing the Duke bust length in uniform of the Rifle Brigade. His aiguillette on the right shoulder denotes his position as a personal Aide de Camp to his mother, Queen Victoria. The rank badge on the collar indicates a date before 1880 when the rank badges were moved to the shoulder cords. This is one of the less common portraits of the Prince in uniform. The fashionable society photographer Bassano moved to Old Bond Street in 1877 which further helps in dating this image.      sep3/1
