HUTWA. The young Maharaja photographed in about 1904

The very good portrait of  Maharaja Guru Mahadevesram Prosad Sari of Hutwa by Johnston & Hoffman of Calcutta measures 11½ x 7¼ ins and is on the original photographer’s card, now in a window mount and currently simlpy glazed and framed. It shows the ruler full length wearing richly decorated court dress with pearls and he stands by a table with books including Edmund Candler’s Unveiling of Lhasa published in 1904. The Maharaja was born in 1893 and succeeded to the gadi in 1896. The rulers of this large state in Bihar near Patna were Brahmins from the same group as the Maharaja of Benares. nov16/2
