Ink sketch of an Indian strong man being watched by British officers, c

£38.00

Henry Macdonald, 19th Bengal Native Infantry: A strongman being watching by British officers as he wields a massive hammer. The ink sketch is on a 5¼ x4 ins piece of rather creased paper. As well as writing on the verso in local scripts there is what may be the man’s name fudge! Macdonald often included his lively sketches in letters home. jan5/3

Provenance: Acquired,, when I lived in Edinburgh, in a large archive of material from the family of Macdonald of Sandside several of whose members served the East India Company in both military and civil capacities. A few other items from the archive appear elsewhere on the website.
