The 4 x 2½ ins carte de visite shows H.H. Sir Muhabat Khanji, K.C.S.I., Nawab of Junagadh seated and wearing the insignia of the Most Exalted Order of the Star of Indian with which he had been invested in May 1871. Standing beside him in matching Indian court dress is his son and heir, Bahadur Khanji, who was to succeed his father in 1882. He wears a sword of North Indian tulwar style in a velvet covered scabbard. The card has no photographer’s credit and there is a small drawing pin hole in the top centre. Junagadh or Junagarh was an eleven gun salute state in the Kathiawar Agency of Western India, the area now called Gujarat. The ruling family was of Pathan origins.       dec15/1
