Sona Marg. A good full plate 11 x 9 ins titled on the old card page Above Sona MargThe images shows the rugged river banks some 50 miles north east of the capital, Srinagar, with snowy peaks in the distance. The reverse of this card page shows a smaller 8½ x 6 ins view In Liddar Valley showing a tented camp in the forested foothills of the Himalaya. Both photographs have a little light fading to top and bottom edges. apr16/1

Provenance: These images came from an incomplete album originally put together by Lt. Colonel Peter Bairnsfather who commanded the 14th Bengal Lancers [Murray’s Jat Lancers] in the 1890s. He spent time in Kashmir on hunting trips when on leave from regimental duties.
