Livery button with the crest of a winged creature issuing from a mural crown

£15.00

An attractive, unidentified, heraldic livery button with crest of a winged creature issuing from a mural crown, 27mm gilt, with the backmark FIRMIN & SONS 155 STRAND LONDON & 15 CONDUIT ST. The mural crown, in the form of a castellated wall, is often associated in British military heraldry with great defences in sieges. It probably occurs most often in connection with the siege of Jellalabad during the 1st Afghan War after which it was notably incorporated into the badges of the 13th Regiment [later the Somerset Light Infantry] and Indian troops which defended with them. nov3/2.
