Major General James Cavan Berkeley, C.I.E. [1839-1926]. A three quarter length portrait in uniform of a major general wearing his C.I.E, 6 x 4 ins, double mounted on the late Victorian photographer’s card of Thos. Fall, 48 Notting Hill Gate, W.. The photogaph and its paper mount are lifting from the card mount, tipped back temporarily with blue tack by us for photographic purposes. This dates from some time after 24th May 1888 when he was made a Companion of the Most Eminent Order of the Indian Empire when he was noted as Colonel,Madras Staff Corps. jan15/1

Major-General Berkeley joined the Indian Army in the fateful year of 1857 first appearing in the East India Refister for the first time in the Cadet / Ensign list of the season 1857 and was commissioned Ensign in the 10th Madras Native Infantry on 15th December, promoted Lieutenant 10th June 1859, from about 1863 he appears on civil employ, sometime as Resident and Agent to the Governor General in Baroda. He transferred to the Political Department in1882 and was successively British Resident at Gwalior (1883), Kashmir (1884) and Nepal Courts (1884).  In 1901 his family was living in Branksome, Dorset.
