Major General James Cavan Berkeley, C.I.E. [1839-1926].

A good cabinet card by P. Vuccino & Co Bombay. Poona, India, with a bust length portrait of Berkeley mid 1880s in civilian clothes when he was employed in the political department as a resident. Sold together with a  6 x 4 ins of his second wife, Caroline Maud [Tomlinson] and their children on photographer’s card of Owen, Bournemouth. Another listing, jan15/1 shows the general. a little later, in military uniform. jan15/2

Major-General Berkeley joined the Indian Army in the fateful year of 1857 first appearing in the East India Refister for the first time in the Cadet / Ensign list of the season 1857 and was commissioned Ensign in the 10th Madras Native Infantry on 15th December, promoted Lieutenant 10th June 1859, from about 1863 he appears on civil employ, sometime as Resident and Agent to the Governor General in Baroda. He transferred to the Political Department in1882 and was successively British Resident at Gwalior (1883), Kashmir (1884) and Nepal Courts (1884).  In 1901 his family was living in Branksome, Dorset.
