Military officer’s plume tin for use with a cocked hat

A military officer’s japanned metal plume tin. The tin measures 15 x 2¾ ins and has a lid at each end, both in good working order. There is some scatching to the paint and a couple of dents to one side, shown in an illustration, commensurate with use. Pre WWI regulations prescribed plumes of varying lengths, those of swan feathers worn by senior officers usually being of around 10 inches.  The tin has to open at both ends or it would not be possible for the feathers to fold back correctly. There is an old label to one lid but rather unhelpfully it merely reads 1 .  jul27/3
