Napoleon. A brass medal by Andrieu commemorating the Retreat from Russia in 1812

The brass 38mm diameter medallion depicts a right facing classical bust of Napoleon wearing a wreath of laurel with the wording NAPOLEON EMP. ET ROI . The reverse shows an allegorical image of a retreating Roman soldier pursued by a strange airborne figure in a landscape including a dead horse and abandoned artillery. In the exergue is written RETRAITE DE L’ARMÉE. NOVEMBRE. MDCCCXII . The obverse is signed ANDRIEU F.  and the reverse DENON D. There is a small length of fine brass chain attached to a small ring on the right side and a hole on the left where the ring at the other end of the chain would have been attached.    jun28/1
