Frontispiece portrait, viii, 622pp. Contemporary straight grained dark plum morocco gilt with coat of arms gilt blocked to each board, all edges gilt, minor rubbing and wear to spine and edges of boards, internally an extremely clean copy with no previous ownership markings other than Lord Northbrook’s armorial bookplate to thepastedown. Books from Viceroys’ libraries do not often appear. jul29/3
Thomas George Baring, 1st Earl of Northbrook [1826-1904] became the 5th Baron on the death of his father in 1866. He was Viceroy of India from 1872 to 1876 in which year he was advanced in the peerage to Viscount and Earl. The bookplate shows his earl’s coronet above the arms.

Henry St. George Tucker [1771-1881] went out to India as a Midshipman in 1786 but woeked in a secretaial capacity. He was secetary to Sir William Jones 1790 and became a Writer in 1792. He served in Calcutta as a captain in the Volunteer Cavalry,  Military Secretary to Lord Wellesley 1799. He rose to be Chief Secretary in India in 1814, the year before he left for England. He was Director of the HEIC from 1826 and Chairman of the Court 1834-42. The arms on the boards are his.
