A very good armorial bookplate of a senior Royal Navy officer, Admiral Sir Hugh Pigot, K.C.B., K.C.H.  [1775-1857]. The plate, 88 x 62 mm,  shows his arms with his two knighthoods, the Order of the Bath and Hanoverian Order, pendant beneath, surrounded by the motto of the higher Order of the Bath. Joining the Navy in 1788 and served widely during the Napoleonic Wars before moving to the West Indies and, as a post captain, seizing a number of enemy ships during the American War of 1812. He achieved the rank of Vice Admiral in 1847, from around when this bookplate must date. He achieved his final rank of Admiral in 1853. oct20/2
