Royal George. A relic from the ship wrecked at Spithead in 1782

£65.00

A piece of wood measuring 18 x 32 x 20 cm has paper round it with an inscription dated 1840 wrapped around it, tied with string, reading Piece of Wood from the Royal George. Sunk at Spithead June 28th 1782. From Captn. Kellog Dec 1840 . The Royal George was a 100 gun warship which sank as it left for the relief of the siege of Gibraltar,   Oct4/2

Privenance: I bought this at an auction of the contents of Strelley Hall, Nottingham, November 1978 where many naval souvenirs, portraits, etc were sold, connected like this with the period around the Siege of Gibraltar.
