Shere Ali Khan, Amir of Afghanistan. A cdv of 1879

£80.00

A very good carte de visite by The London Stereoscopic and Photographic Company showing the Amir full length seated holding a sword of mameluke style. This is thought to have been taken in the year of his death. He succeeded his father Dost Mohammed Khan as Amir after a struggle with his brother. His refusal to accept a full time British envoy in Kabul led to British invasion of Afghanistan fearful of his leanings towards the perceived enemy, Russia.         jan14/1
