Silhouette portrait of Sir Tatton Sykes, York c.1830

The silhouette shows a gentleman, bust length, wearing a low top hat of the type used when riding. It has some bronzing and  some blue detailing and appears to be painted on card. The size over the frame is 4½ x 3½.  The sitter is identified as Sir Tatton Sykes, York 1830. It is in a glazed gilt brass frame of the type often inserted into a wooden or papier maché black frame. The old backing paper has a label reading Sir James Yoxall Collection.

The Sykes family have long lived at Sledmere House to the east of York.

Sir James Henry Yoxall [1857-1925] was a Liberal politician and collector who wrote a popular book, The A B C of Collecting.
