The Metropolitan. A vintage police whistle from the first half of the 20th century.

The heavy, silver plated whistle is of a standard pattern used by police force and is stamped The Metropolitan above the wording Patent. J.Hudson & Co. 244 Barr Street Birmingham. The overall length of the whistle is 8.3cm and it has a slightly less bulbous end below the ring than the Leeds example listed at aug15/1. There is some loss of the plating through use but the whistle is completely sound.  When blown it creates that distinctive loud noise one  remembers from watching or listening to stories like Sherlock Holmes ringing through city streets during exciting chases. aug15/2
