Thornton’s Gazetteer of India, revised edition of 1886

£75.00

Thornton, Edward:  A Gazetteer of the Territories Under the Government of the Viceroy of India. Revised and edited by Sir Roper Lethbridge, C.I.E. and Arthur N. Wollaston.

W. H. Allen & Co. [London] 1886 Very thick 8vo [ 8½ x 6 x 3½ ins].

viii.  1070pp. Later unlettered plain cloth binding, fairly sound but this copy has spent time in India and has intermittent insect holes, the occasional tear, edge loss to page 303 and occasional old repairs, some pulling away from stitching in places as this sort of book is so thick it is hard to bind. However the paper is not brittle and it is a useful reference copy of a book which is hard to find in any edition. The single volume edition replaced the four volume edition 1854 and this edition shows the change of title from the East India Company. Thornton [1799 – 1875] worked at the East India House 1814 to 1857, being Director of the Statistical and marine Departments. He also produced histories of the Indian Empire. We find our own copy of this work invaluable. oct16/8
