Viceroy’s Band. A scarce pair of medals to a sergeant in the band

£375.00

Durbar Medal 1911 [SERGT. J. HIDES. H. E. THE VICEROY’S BAND] & Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal with Geo G uniform bust [Serjt. J. Hides, H. E. the Viceroy’s Band]. The Durbar medal, which was issued without naming, is impressed whereas the LSGC is named in engraved script in the standard was. The band was composed of soldiers seconded from British regiments so, although serving in what we might consider an Indian unit, the sergeant received a Britush Arny medal rather than an Indian one. The recipient is worthy of further research but it is rather nice to think of him playing at events during the 10 days of the Durbar in Delhi and probably also at the later royal events in Calcutta. The medals are both in good VF condition with original ribbon, in the case of the Durbar medal with a top brooch bar.
