William IV silver salt spoon, 1831

£12.00

The 4¼ ins fiddle pattern silver spoon is hallmarked London 1831 with the maker’s mark W.E. The inside of the bowl retains the originally gilding put in place to prevent corrosion when in contact with the salt. For those interested in the oddities of hallmarking it is the case that although the date letter puts this spoon into the reign of William IV, the duty head mark is the one that was used for George IV.   nov11/2

NB  The photograph of the front of the spoon fails to show the gold of the bold but it is very clearly there.
