15th Madras Native Infantry. Officer’s undress stable or shell jacket

£550.00

The short. scarlet, shell or stable, undress jacket has white facings with large crown rank badges, 50 x 20 mm approx.,  to the high collar. It retains the 12 original 16mm buttons in pairs to the front although the pair of buttons that would have been on the cuffs are missing and the epaulettes are not present. There is some insect damage to several parts [some of the worst shown in our illustrations] but we think the jacket is eminently repairable. The lining is very worn on the padded central parts but much better around the edges. The buttons have the fairly standard style of Madras infantry with the regimental number XIII within a laurel wreath with the battle honour SERINGAPATAM beneath and the Victorian crown above. These have no back mark but are of the usual fine manufacture. We are not sure of the precise date of this uniform but believe it is 1840 – 58.  feb12/4
