55th Kincardineshire Rifle Volunteers. An 1860 Commission signed by the Earl of Kintore

A manuscript Lord Lieutenant’s Commission, written in a clerk’s hand on the lower half of a large folded sheet of stout paper, signed Kintore and with the 8th Earl’s seal in red wax bottom right. dated 23rd May 1860 at Keith Hall appointing Alfred H. W. Farrell to be Captain of the Third Corps of Fifty-fifth or Kincardineshire Rifle Volunteers. Three vertical folds, offsetting from seal, otherwise clean. Together with a manuscript letter addressed to Captain Farrell regretting his resignation from the Corps. Written in a neat copperplate hand on a single foolscap bifolium of blue paper [with an additional three horizontal folds and one vertical], dated June 29th 1863 from Lawrence Kirk and signed by 14 members of the regimental band – William Downer Hewitt [in the same hand as the letter], David Greig, Charles Hampton, Charles Arkison, Andrew Wood, John Crabb, James A Walker, James Stewart, James Edward James Colburn, Michael Arkison, William Carnegie, James Carnegie, John C Eaton.   A scarce piece of Scottish Volunteer history.
