Sir Henry James Sumner Maine [1822-1888] was a distinguished academic lawyer/After serving as Professor of Civil Law at Cambridge 1847-54, in 1862 he became Legal Member of the Supreme Council in India, Vice-Chancellor of Calcutta University.
