The preface to this new edition has a simplistic view of the causes of the Mutiny, which had begun in the spring of 1857. The editor suggests The chief causes of the Mutiny are the dissatisfaction of the Mohammadans at being deprived of their suoremacy, and dthe intrigues of the deposed Princes…. It is a Hindu pretext, but a Mohammadan  motive.  oct6/2
