£45.00

H.H. Sultan Jahan Begum became ruler of Bhopal in 1901 and lost her consort, Sultan Doulah shortly afterwards. The first private, letter in his own, hand is from Colonel Malcolm J, Meade who had been Political Agent at Bhopal from 1891 to 1896. It is dated 16th  January 1902 and is written from The Residency, Baroda on five sides of two bifolia of small mourning writing paper [page size 7 x 4¼ ins] addressed to My dear Friend offering his great sympathy. The final two pages have translation into the local language of the court. A second letter is written on three sides of a similar bifolium from the same address and is signed believe me always your sincere friend.Florence Meade. This also has a translation on the final page. Both letters are tipped to parts of sheets of brown paper which was used in simple folders to keep letters in Bhopal. aug22/1
