BIKANER. A young Maharaja Ganga Singh in a Zouave style military tunic
£300.00
A very good cabinet card portrait by Herzog & Higgins, Mhow, Central India 6½ x 4¼ ins showing H. H. Maharaja Ganga Singh of Bikaner in Zouave style tunic, probably an undress uniform of the Ganga Risala Camel Corps. He is shown bust length wearing Sam Browne belt and a turban which seems to be of the Camel Corps pattern. The well toned photograph is in excellent clean condition and the card reverse has an erased old stamp which would probably have been of the Tosha Khana Bikaner showing it has once been in a palace treasury. In this image His Highness appears to be perhaps in his early to mid teens [he was born in 1880]; his moustache is here in an early phase before it achieved its later characteristic style. dec16/3
