Dorsetshire Regiment. Victorian card with regimental device – Primus in Indis

£20.00

The green card, 3½ x 2½ ins with rounded corners, displays a handsome regimental badge beneath a Victorian crown, proudly displaying  on a garter its motto PRIMUS IN INDIS which it was awarded after being the first British line regiment to be deployed in India in 1754. At about the same time the regiment was awarded the battle honour PLASSEY. The central castle and key design is worn by regiments which took part in the siege of Gibraltar. The back of the card is obscured by some paper where it has been pasted to an old album leaf but it seems to be exactly the same size and style as a standard playing card. This would make a great title statement to a display of regimental medals, badges, or buttons.        may25/3
