Hope Weir. The handsome engraved, 105 x 75 mm, armorial bookplate of The Honourable Charles Hope Weir of Craigiehall & Blackwood, Esqr. [1710 -1791]. The Hon Charles Hope was the second son of the 1st Earl of Hopetoun and brother of the 2nd earl. He added the Weir upon his marriage to Catherine Weir [d. 1743], heiress of Sir William Weir of Blackwood. In 1743 he entered Parliament as MP for Linlithgowshire. In 1754 he travelled on the Grand Tour to Italy taking with him the young architect who was involved in the decoration of Hopetoun House near Edinburgh. The first and third quarters of the arms are those born by the Marquess of Linlithglow. The bookplate has a small tear without loss at lower left side just above the capital T.    may10/4
