Indian Mutiny interest. Hart’s Army & Militia List 1858. The first two quarterly lists of the year bound together

£45.00

Hart, Colonel H.G.: The New Army List, and Militia List exhibiting the rank, standing, and various services of every Regimental Officer in the Army serving on full pay, including the Royal Marines….1st January, 1858. John Murray [London] 1858 1st edition 8vo

385pp. Bound with: the second quarterly list for this year, corrected to 1st  April 1858. 393pp. The clean text block has split from the binding along the endpapers and through the tapes but the contemporary half leather binding with marble paper covered boards is sound with minor wear at extremities and the hinges would be fairly straight forward to replace. These two quarters cover the late stages of the Mutiny with Campbell’s attack on Lucknow and the capture of Jhansi.  The official end of the campaign was just a few months away. A large number of infantry regiments are shown as serving in India and having the consecutive quarters reveals that pressure is still continuing as some regiments are shown on the way to India, at Malta for instance, in the first quarter but are serving in India in the second.  These volumes have all the usual information including War Services,  Promotions, appointments, & Deaths, &c  but, being a quarterly volumes they are not indexed. A very useful working copy.  may30/1
