Lady Hardinge of Penshurst, Vicereine of India. Signed portrait 1912
£130.00
Lady Hardinge of Penshurst, Vicereine of India 1910-1916. A small photographic portrait, 9¾ x 5¾ ins mounted on card which is currently a little bowed but could be flattened. The irritiating damage towards her right shoulder has been caused by a knock from behind and could probably be much improved by the careful application of archival tape. The Vicereine is shown full length in a full formal evening dress wearing tiara and medals including the Imperial Order of the Crown of India [awarded in January 2010 on her husband’s appointment as Viceroy of India]. It is signed in ink along the bottom Winifred, Hardinge of Penshurst 1912. She and her husband were in office from 1910 to 1916 and the only Viceroy and Vicereine to welcome a reigning British monarch to India, on the occasion of the Delhi Durbar & Imperial Tour of India. 1911-12. apr22/2
Although the son of Viscount, Hardinge was the second son so on his appointment to India he was advanced to the Peerage as a Basron.
